In this article, I will share my personal experience how I started my online business from home and how I managed to create a stable income source for myself.
Here are some context about myself. My name is Lynn and I am a stay at home mom (SAHM). My family is staying in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia.
I have 2 young daughters and I have my own online business.
Before I got married, I was a HR executive with a manufacturing company in KL.
When I got married and had my first daughter, I made a conscious decision to be a full time mother to take care of my baby.
2 years after I had my daughter, me and my husband had our second child.
Getting back into the workforce
After 6 years of being a stay at home mom, I’ve decided to get back into the workforce.
However, because I have not been working for more than 7 years, getting a job was actually quite challenging.
After going through 5 to 6 unsuccessful job interviews, I had to forgo my plan to get a full time job and decided to start an online business of my own.
I believe there are many women in Malaysia especially mothers who are in the same situation.
They want to stay at home to take care of their children, but they also need a source of income.
The best option for them is to start an online business.
Starting an online business
I will be brutally honest, if you want to make money online, you must know how to sell stuff on the internet.
You might be thinking, “Can I build an online business without any capital investment?”
The answer is no, you can’t.
If you want to start your own online business, you cannot do it without paying for anything.
If you want to have an online business, you will definately need a website.
To build a website, you will have to spend money on domain and website hosting.
The good news is, your website fixed cost is not that high.
You will need to set aside RM100 – RM200 per month to have your business website.
After you have setup your website, you will need to determine what product you want to sell.
My advise is, forget about selling cheap product which you can source from China.
Reason being, the product from China is of low value and the profit margin you’ll make would be too small.
Selling a product with low profit margin would not worth your time and effort.
What I would suggest is to sell something unique which is of high sales value.
For my online business, I’ve decided to sell a health and wellness garment imported from Japan. The picture below is me wearing the compression pants from Japan.
I managed to find a company that imports the garment from Japan and decided to partner with them.
If you are a stay at home mother, do not try to run all aspect of your business by yourself.
Doing everything yourself will be too difficult because you won’t have enough time.
The reason I’ve decided to partner with the garment importer is because they can handle the product inventory warehousing and product delivery on my behalf.
Outsourcing that aspect of my business has enabled me to focus on the most important part of my business…which is online marketing.
Online marketing is a set of tools and methodologies used for promoting products and services through the internet.techopedia.com
If you want to build an online business, you must learn how to market your product effectively on the internet and social media. The way to do so is to setup a blog on your website and start producing content.
For my business, I will write on the benefits of the product I am selling and publish it on my blog.
My blog posts will be indexed by the search engine such as Google and send potential buyers to my website.
For social media, I will create videos that I’ve recorded with my smartphone and post in on Facebook and YouTube.
These videos will also direct traffic to my website where I can engage with my potential customers.
So far, the marketing stategy I’ve explained above has worked very well for me. Because the product I am selling is unique and of high value, the income generated from my online business has been very good.
On certain good months, my monthly income has exceeded RM10K.
