Please allow me to share with you a story.
Our liver
More than 10 years ago, I was a regular member at a gym in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.
I went to the gym 3 times every week.
At the gym, I’ve learnt martial arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, boxing and also kettlebell weight training.
I got to know a young guy at the gym, his name was Mr. L.
Mr. L was working as a personal trainer at the gym.
He was also in my boxing and kettlebell classes and we used to train and spar together.
As a personal trainer, he works at the gym from morning until evening.
After that, he will join us in the fitness workout classes.
Usually, I will go to the kettlebell workout out class in the evening.
I went to the gym quite early in order to avoid the rush hour traffic.
Normally, I am the first one to arrive for the class.
One day, when I reached the gym, I saw Mr. L sleeping on the floor next to the door.
He woke up as I entered the room and I asked him if he was OK.
He told me he was tired and wanted to take a rest before the kettlebell class begins.
Mr. L seems to be getting tired very often, probably his job at the gym was tiring and he needed to rest.
I didn’t think much of it.
What I noticed was, sometimes Mr. L will miss the boxing and sparring sessions.
A couple of weeks later, I got the news from the gym owner that Mr. L has resigned as a fitness trainer there.
I thought Mr. L is going to work at another gym.
However, the gym owner said Mr. L won’t be working for a while because he had to go for medical treatment.
I asked what kind of medical treatment?
The gym owner told me that Mr. L was diagnosed with late stage liver failure.
I was surprised and couldn’t believe it.
Mr. L was young, looks healthy and very fit.
If the gym owner didn’t tell me, I wouldn’t have guessed that he had a liver failure issue.
The gym owner told me Mr. L himself was surprised also.
Mr. L said that his doctor recommended him to go for surgery.
After discussion with his parents, Mr. L decided to follow his doctor’s recommendation to go for surgery.
All the gym members were very concerned about Mr. L’s condition.
Throughout that time, Mr. L’s sister was in contact with the gym owner and updating us his condition.
Because Mr. L’s condition was quite serious, his doctor hastened the surgery on his liver.
Couple of weeks passed, on a Saturday evening during our regular martial art sparring session, we saw a very familiar face at the gym.
It was Mr. L!
All of us were very happy to see him.
Mr. L looked like his regular self but has lost a lot of weight since we last saw him.
He showed us the scar on his abdomen where he had surgery done on his liver.
During the surgery, the doctor had removed a large portion of his liver and he was on medical supervision.
He told us he is very grateful to be alive.
We were very glad to see him and took pictures together in the gym.
A few weeks passed…
One day I received a WhatsApp message from the gym owner.
In the message, he said with a heavy heart, Mr. L has passed away.
I remembered that was a very sad day.
At that time. Mr. L was only 28 years old…he died so suddenly.
Though from the outside he looks fit and healthy, but he didn’t know he had liver failure until it was too late.
When Mr. L found out about his liver condition, it was already at the final stage and there was nothing much the doctor can do for him.
Even though he did the surgery, but in the end, he died.
Liver health
After my experience of loosing a friend due to liver disease, I went online to do some research on liver health.
Apparently, liver disease is quite common in Malaysia.
According to Gleneagles Hospitals website:
“Liver cancer is the eighth most common cancer for both genders in Malaysia. It is also a cause of premature deaths in the country.
In 2020, the total number of liver cancer cases reported in Malaysia was 2,149, making it among the top 5 in the list of cancers affecting Malaysians.”
That’s why it is very important to have regular health checks and take steps to take care of our liver.
The reason I am sharing this story because it has to do with liver health.
