Welcome to Mommy Lynn Blog. My name is Will and I am from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Above is a picture of me taken at Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto, Japan.
My wife Lynn and I are professional network marketers.
We have been building our network marketing business by partnering with one of the fastest growing network marketing company in Malaysia since March 2018.
Our journey in network marketing has been quite amazing.
When we first got started, my wife and I were living in a small rented one story house in Bandar Sri Damansara, Kuala Lumpur.
4 years later, we bought a new free hold landed 2 story super link house with the House Fund from our network marketing business.
It’s fair to say that my wife and I achieved a good level of success building our business in the network marketing / multi-level marketing (MLM) industry.
In this article, I thought of sharing a story of my encounter with a gentleman.
The message of my story is on why a young person should seize the opportunity when they found a mentor who is willing to guide them.
Back in May 2022, I received a message on WhatsApp from a gentleman that found us through our blog.
I have published many articles sharing our journey in building our MLM business.
The gentlemen’s name is Mr. R.
Forgive me for not revealing his real name due to privacy reason.
During our WhatsApp conversation, I’ve learnt that Mr. Raj is a single guy from Ipoh.
He is 28 years old.
He has been working for the last 8 months in the role of customer service.
He reached a stage where he is looking for something better for his life because he does not see much future in his current role.
He wanted to get into network marketing and has been looking for a mentor to guide him.
My first thought was Wow!
This guy at such a young age is willing to reach out to someone successful to mentor him.
That is really smart of him.
If he wants to be successful in network marketing, reaching out to someone who is already successful in the business and asking to be mentored is a short cut to success.
I wish I had the some wisdom when I was in my late twenties to have the guts to ask a successful businessman to mentor me.
Having a mentor would have saved me a lot of time where I don’t have to “trial and error” and make my own mistakes to be successful.
Mr. R’s initiative asking to be mentored impressed me.
I went ahead and scheduled a Zoom meeting with him.
I was really excited to meet Mr. R on Zoom.
If he really wanted to be successful in MLM and willing to learn, I am more than happy to mentor him.
The Zoom meeting was scheduled the following night after dinner.
During the Zoom meeting, I requested Mr. R to switch on his phone camera because I wanted to see who I am talking to.
He did switch on his camera and he look like a decent man.
He was at a mamak stall during the Zoom call because he said it has a better internet connect there.
We chatted for a while and I asked him what’s the reason he wanted to get into network marketing.
He told me he wanted to learn to be successful in sales so that he can use his selling skills to start his own business.
I shared with him some tips.
If he wanted to succeed in sales, he need to learn how to use the internet and also social media.
These are the 2 medium which I am good at to generate leads for our MLM business.
During the Zoom meeting, I didn’t share the marketing and commission plan with Mr. R.
I wanted to invite him into a bigger online meeting where he can get to see all the people building a network marketing business.
Coincidentally, there was a big online Zoom meeting business opportunity sharing coming up.
I told Mr. R that I will share with him some preliminary information about the Zoom event.
My conversation with Mr. R on Zoom lasted about 30 mins.
I proceed to share some info about the upcoming Zoom event and I told Mr. R that I will contact him again in the next couple of days.
2 days later, I messaged Mr. R on WhatsApp asking him whether he has reviewed the information I’ve shared with him a few days earlier.
My text messaged had 2 blue ticks and there was no reply.
A few hours later, I messaged him again asking when we can have another Zoom meeting.
Again no response.
Yup, you guessed it…I have been ghosted.
To be honest, I felt a bit sad about the whole encounter.
I am sad not for me, I am actually sad for Mr. R.
Mr. R took the initiative to reach out and found someone who is willing to spend the time and energy to mentor him to become successful in the field of network marketing.
Unfortunately, he did not seize the opportunity that was given to him.
Will I agree to mentor him if Mr. R were to contact me again?
Of course I will but I will give him a lot of hoops to jump through.
Based on my previously experience, now he has to prove to me that he is worth my time and energy to mentor him.
If he still want me to mentor him, he has to make a trip to Kuala Lumpur and meet me personally.
Action speaks louder than words.
If a young person ever asked you to be his mentor, look at his action rather than his words.
